NoMa BID Elects New Board Members, Names 2018 Partners of the Year at 2019 Annual Meeting
Brigg Bunker of Foulger-Pratt Becomes Board Chair as Longtime Leader Douglas M. Firstenberg of Stonebridge Steps Down
Washington, D.C. — At the 12th annual meeting of the NoMa Business Improvement District (NoMa BID), held on April 24, 2019, five new Directors were elected to the Board by the BID membership:
- Caiti Anderson, General Manager, REI
- John Clarkson, Senior Vice President, JBG Smith
- Josh Dix, Principal, Trammell Crow Company
- Christopher Lynch, Co-Owner, Wunder Garten
- Pamela Tapscott, Vice President and Director of Contract Operations, Mathematica
In addition, longtime Board member and Chair Douglas M. Firstenberg, Principal at Stonebridge, stepped down, and Brigg Bunker, a Managing Parter at Foulger-Pratt, became the new Chair. Berkeley Shervin, President of The Wilkes Company, is the new vice-chair.
With Firstenberg’s departure from the board this year, and that of Charles “Sandy” Wilkes of The Wilkes Company in 2018, the NoMa BID says farewell to two men who were crucial leaders for the organization’s first dozen years, including leading the effort to establish the public-private partnership with the D.C. Government that is funding the NoMa Parks Foundation and creating terrific parks for the NoMa community. (Wilkes will remain as Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Directors.)
“Doug and Sandy have been incredible advocates for NoMa, and we are so thankful for what they’ve accomplished in this neighborhood,” said BID President Robin-Eve Jasper. “They had the vision for what this part of D.C. could become, the passion to rally others to the cause, and the dedication to stick around and witness many of the results of their tremendous efforts. Now the baton has been passed to Brigg and the BID’s Board of Directors. We’re excited for what the next years hold for NoMa.”
Also at the annual meeting, the NoMa BID also celebrated the great people and organizations it worked with in 2018 by through its annual Partner of the Year awards:
- Community Partner: Sylvia Pinkney, ANC 5E04 Commissioner
- Public-Sector Partner: Melvyn Smith, Homeless Service Outreach Coordinator, D.C. Department of Human Services
- Private-Sector Partner: Charles “Sandy” Wilkes, The Wilkes Company
Finally, the NoMa BID noted the retirement of Ibrahim Turayson at the annual meeting. Turayson, who came to the U.S in the early 1990s from Sierra Leone as a result of the civil war there, was hired as the BID’s first Hospitality Ambassador in 2008. After more than 10 years of serving as a friendly, helpful presence around NoMa, Turayson will soon move back to his home country to enjoy retirement with his family and friends.
