District Source: Union Market Development Gets Initial Approval at Zoning

Edens Development still has a few t’s to cross and i’s to dot before final approval of its proposed addition above Union Market in NE D.C., but Wednesday night the Zoning Commission (ZC) granted initial approval to the concept that would build an Angelika movie theater and either office or residential above Union Market.

The biggest challenge from the ZC facing the developers is that a group of commissioners continue to oppose plans to move the Union Market sign from its current level to the top of the addition–with the addition the building will reach 120 feet in height and the sign would be higher. The Office of Planning (OP) recommended approval in its letter to the commission, contingent on the Union Market sign remaining in its current location directly above the market building.

Commissioners asked the developers to come back with new alternatives for the sign location. Commissioner Hood said he would not want the sign to stand in the way of final approval in March.
