Washington, D.C., November 4, 2013 – Curtis Clay has joined the NoMa Business Improvement District to oversee the neighborhood’s parks and open space initiatives. As Director of Park and Public Realm Development, Mr. Clay will lead the collaboration between the NoMa Parks Foundation and the NoMa BID to acquire sites, design parks, and build a network of public spaces for this rapidly growing neighborhood. With the recent investment of $50 million from the District government, NoMa is moving ahead with the development of parks and open spaces.

“We wanted to be absolutely certain we had the right person on board who could oversee the timely delivery of great parks in NoMa,” said Robin-Eve Jasper, President of the NoMa BID. “We could not find a better steward than Curtis for the significant assets that have been committed for NoMa parks and open spaces.”

Curtis Clay is a licensed architect in the District of Columbia and has management experience supervising all phases of design and construction. He holds architecture degrees from both Howard University and the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Formerly at Perkins & Will, he has 13 years of project experience designing and managing a wide variety of project types, including multifamily, office, embassies, parks, schools and master planning. Mr. Clay recently completed work on the design of the new Ballou High School and oversaw the highly successful redevelopment of Eastern Market (Capitol Hill’s premier neighborhood civic space) following the catastrophic fire of 2007.

For the past four years, Mr. Clay has served as the Mayor’s representative on the DC Construction Codes Coordinating Board, where he is chair of the Accessibility Technical Advisory Group.

The plan was created after months of careful analysis and with input from a cross-section of community stakeholders. Over the coming months, planners and area residents will evaluate the proposed park designs in terms of their ability to bring neighbors together and to fulfill individual, family, and community space needs and recreation requirements. Additionally, final designs will incorporate the best available thinking on urban parks, public safety, sustainability, handicapped accessibility, and ease of maintenance.
