Washington Business Journal: Big changes coming to Union Market as Edens’ plan for theater, residential or office earns nod

Union Market owner Edens on Monday earned the unanimous approval of the D.C. Zoning Commission to layer the Northeast D.C. food hub with a movie theater and apartments in what has been described as a catalytic addition for the changing community.

The 5-0 vote followed a brief commission debate and an on-the-spot Edens’ concession: Rather than maintaining the planned Union Market park and plaza for five years, the developer agreed to manage both spaces, totaling 19,500 square feet between them, for the life of the project. Edens further placated commissioners by agreeing to move the iconic Union Market sign from the roof of the addition to the theater level, on the Fifth Street side of the project. Union Market is located at 1309 Fifth St. NE.
